You can upgrade the motherboard to an m14x R2 which will give you a 650m instead of 550m plus support for intel core 3rd gen CPUs.  On the R1 you are stuck with the second gen.

I'm currently working on an m14x R1 actually.  Upgrading the screen to the 900p option, new keyboard, and new touchpad.  Also did a full tear down and cleaned out dust.  Redid the thermal paste too, which dramatically decreased system heat and fan noise.

The best upgrade is buy a different laptop. This is not a desktop computer it is not upgradeable in that regards.

You are absolutely wrong.

Many Alienware laptops have upgradeable CPUs.  The m14x R1 is one of them.

Officially supported:

i3-2310M, 2.1GHz, Duo Core

i5-2410M, 2.3GHz, Duo Core

i5-2540M, 2.6GHz, Duo Core

i7-2630QM, 2.0GHz, Quad Core

i7-2720QM, 2.2GHz, 6MB

i7-2820QM, 2.3GHz, 8MB

May work:

2960XM and the 2920XM

I believe those are the absolute best in socket for that particular socket.  I did some quick googling and I'm not sure they can be overclocked in the m14x (so XM CPU kinda pointless) and they get very hot in the m14x (it was not designed for these after all).

So at most, get i7-2820QM since that is something that could have actually been bought from Alienware when configuring the system.  Those are about $70 on ebay and I don't really think it is worth it unless the cpu you have is broken.
