Five Ways to Get Ready for ESO's Greymoor Chapter

Are you ready for the Dark Heart of Skyrim?

Whether you’re an Elder Scrolls Online vet player or a fan of the series in general, with the release of ESO’s Greymoor chapter just one week away (!!!!) excitement is brimming in the Elder Scrolls community. Update 26 will see a return to a much loved area in western Skyrim and Blackreach. I don’t know about y’all but I am so here for the funky glowing mushrooms, returning to the Winking Skeever in Solitude and the interesting skill line changes and additions. With the content release nearly upon us, new and vet players should be focused on getting their characters ready to ensure a smooth experience when exploring the new zone and all its content.

Here are the top five things you can do in game to get yourself ready to return to the Dark Heart of Skyrim.

5. Clear your inventory and level up your bank

If you’re a packrat (like me), you tend to hang on to old gear for far, far too long. “But what if I create another DPS toon and really need that fifth bound and useless Arms of Relequen maul or that full set of Hundings that I haven't worn in six months?” Channel your inner Marie Kondo, thank those items for their service, and let them go. Either make a new character and dump it in their inventory, or commit to researching or deconstructing it. If the items aren't account bound, make it a point to sell off those items in the guild marketplace. Inventory space is far too precious to hang on to old things you just won’t use or need and gold is better anyway. The upcoming release will also bring new sets and items to collect and you’ll enjoy playing unencumbered far more than struggling with your inventory every few minutes.

Still just not ready to part with that partial set of Sanctuary you’ve been socking away for that hypothetical healer you’re going to make “one day”…? I understand, man. I’ve been there too. If you haven’t upgraded your bag inventory and bank all the way, pull out that gold and treat yourself to a bank upgrade. And also maybe just pull the trigger already on that healer. Just saying…

4. Clear your quest backlog

Listen, maybe you just really can’t stand Stibbons or all you wanted was for Stuga to stop yelling at you every time you roll into Daggerfall, but if you have any quests you’ve been putting off or had on the backburner, now is the very best time to cross those off your list.

Along the same line of clearing out your inventory, you can only hold 25 quests in your log and when you roll into new zone, you better believe every NPC will start screaming at you with a dire issue that only you can solve. Taking on those small side quests also serve a function though—they help you work your way more methodically through the zone and serve as a checklist of sorts so you can easily see on your map what you’ve completed and where else you need to go. But if your quest log is crammed full, you might find yourself having to make hard choices about which quests to abandon on the fly to keep the exploration and immersion going. Do yourself a favor and check those quests off your list once and for all, or take a minute and abandon any old ones you really can’t bring yourself to do. It’s ok, you can still save the day some other time.  Your future self will thank you.

3. Grab extra skill points and don’t spend them… yet.

Update 26 will bring some really interesting changes to the existing Vampirism skill trees and we’ll also get a brand new Excavation skill line with the new Antiquities system. Even if you decide not to commit to using either of these skill lines long term, you may still want to try your hand at these abilities and play around with them, and you might not feel like stopping what you’re doing in the middle of Blackreach to go hunt skyshards.

There are several useful add-ons for PC that add skyshard map pins, so grab some of your friends or guildies and make an evening of tracking down shards and adding skill points to spend.

2. Decide how you want to play the content

Depending on how you like to play, you might want to start a brand new character to explore the zone with. Maybe it’s something you like to do the very first time you log in after the update goes live so that you can also play through the new tutorial, or maybe you’re wanting to get a few day’s head start on your skill trees.

Either way, sit down and think about what this new character will be. Maybe a Nord necromancer vampire that has a penchant for finding old relics sounds like just what the doctor ordered. Sit down, plan out what you think sounds the most fun, and for Mara’s sake, pick a name while you’re at it. There’s nothing worse than having the perfect character built in the character creator and then having the game log you out for inactivity because you were googling a lore-friendly name, endlessly spamming a name generator, or were still undecided on your class and got side tracked watching a YouTube video.

It’s also worth noting that with the upcoming changes to vampirism, current vampires might want to read up on the skill changes and decide if they want to continue on their undead path of darkness. Cures are available from priests of Arkay for just a few hundred gold.

1. Do the prologue quest

While the prologue quest was released some weeks ago, if you haven’t given it a go yet, now is the perfect time to get yourself primed for the new main quest. Or perhaps you’re on the fence about purchasing the chapter and want a taste of what the story will be. I won’t post any spoilers here, but to get started, open the Crown Store and select the free quest starter, “Prologue Quest: The Coven Conspiracy.” From there you’ll travel to the Fighter’s Guild hall in your starting alliance zone (Daggerfall, Davon’s Watch or Vulkhel Guard) and speak with Lyris Titanborn.

It’s also worth mentioning for new or returning ESO players that there are some new dungeons that were released earlier this year as part of the year-long Dark Heart of Skyrim adventure. The Harrowstorm DLC grants access to two new dungeons,  Icereach and Unhallowed Grave, which Plus members get access to for free.

Whether you’re a new, returning or existing player, the best things you can do to get ready for the Greymoor chapter is to play the game, clear out your junk, and get excited to explore Skyrim again!

This game is slowly becoming more RPG like an elder scrolls game. This game is fun as hell! Been playing since launch. The exploration and MMO style dungeons are top notch. Just lacks a lot of the Elder Scrolls RPG elements. Which is expected because this isn't a core game.laugh

I agree! I'm a huge fan of the series, and TES Online is so much fun to play. It combines what I love about MMOs with all the ES RPG goodness I love. What do you play?

Started with DK then I made a sorc and really started to play the game. Then I made a Templar, and that's where I've been for the past 5 years or so. I use it for everything, pve and pvp, although I have to remorph anytime I switch between
